Recently, the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology released the "Research Report on Global 5G Standard Essential Patents and Standard Proposals (2023)". Chinese enterprises reported that a total of 5 Chinese brands were selected on the TOP10 list this year, an increase of 1 compared to last year, and currently occupy half of the country. Huawei's 5G standard essential patents rank first globally, and Xiaomi has entered the top ten for the first time with high growth rate.

It is reported that the report conducted a statistical analysis based on all 5G declared patents and their extended family patents in the ETSI patent database as of December 31, 2022. Among the industry entities that ETSI has declared 5G standard essential patents, the top ten enterprises have more than 75% of the total effective global patent families, which basically reflects the main trend of global 5G standard essential patent activities.

From the perspective of the proportion of effective global patent families, Huawei's proportion of effective global patent families is 14.59%, ranking first; Qualcomm ranks second, accounting for 10.04%; Samsung ranks third with a proportion of 8.80%. The companies ranked fourth to tenth are ZTE, LG, Nokia, Ericsson, Datang, OPPO, and Xiaomi.

More data shows that China has achieved a leading advantage in global 5G development. According to the information disclosed by the Intellectual Property Development Research Center of the China National Intellectual Property Administration last year, as of June 2022, there are more than 210000 5G standard essential patents declared globally, involving 47000 patent families, of which 18000 are declared from China, accounting for 40% of the world's total, ranking first.

This time, Xiaomi has made it to the top ten global 5G standard essential patents for the first time. Although it started late, its growth rate is astonishing, and it can be regarded as a high growth model of China's 5G leapfrog development journey. From the perspective of the speed of ranking climb, authoritative data from multiple sources shows that as of the end of 2020, the number of Xiaomi 5G standard patent declarations has entered the top 15 globally, entered the top 13 by the end of 2021, and entered the top 10 by the end of 2022.

It is worth mentioning that Xiaomi established a 5G pre research team at the end of 2015, and has since continuously delved into 5G technology innovation. In contrast, Qualcomm began 5G research and development work as early as 2006, starting about 10 years later. Currently, the effective global patent family share of the two is 10% and 4%, respectively, and the gap is becoming smaller and smaller.

The achievement of such achievements cannot be achieved without the deep participation and comprehensive layout of Xiaomi's technical team in the global standardization field. As of September 2022, Xiaomi has joined over 30 international/national/industry standardization organizations and held key positions in some standardization organizations. Xiaomi has submitted over 3200 technical papers related to 5G/B5G to 3GPP, over 80 audio and video related technical papers to MPEG and 3GPP SA4, and has led and participated in the formulation of over 260 national, industry, and group standards.

Among them, 3GPP is the standardization organization that formulates global mobile communication technology specifications, and Xiaomi implements
