On February 10, according to the data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, in 2021, China's applicants submitted 69500 international patent applications through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), with a year-on-year increase of 0.9%, ranking first in the number of applications for the third consecutive year.

A total of 13 Chinese enterprises have entered the top 50 PCT international patent applicants in the world, an increase of 1 over 2020.
Among them, Huawei ranked first with 6952 applications for five consecutive years, and oppo Guangdong Mobile Communication (2208) and BOE (1980) ranked sixth and seventh respectively.

The remaining 10 enterprises in the top 50 are Ping'an Technology (No. 11, + 6), ZTE (No. 13, + 3), vivo mobile communication (No. 16, + 7), Shenzhen Dajiang (No. 20, + 1), Shenzhen Ruisheng acoustic technology (No. 29, + 58), Wuhan Huaxing Optoelectronics (No. 32, - 8), Shenzhen Huaxing Optoelectronics (No. 33, - 9) Tencent (bit 42, + 11), byte runout (bit 46, - 14), Xiaomi (bit 48, + 8).
A total of 19 universities in China have entered the top 50 of PCT international patent applicants of global educational institutions, an increase of 4 compared with 2020. It is the country with the largest number of Universities on the list, and the United States ranks second (18).

Among them, Zhejiang University ranked second with 306 applications, second only to the University of California (551), and Tsinghua University (No. 4), South China University of Technology (No. 7) and Suzhou University (No. 9) entered the top 10.
Other top 50 universities include Dalian University of technology, Shenzhen University, Shandong University and Peking University.
In terms of technology, computer technology (9.9%) accounts for the largest proportion of PCT international patent applications, followed by digital communication (9.0%), medical technology (7.1%), electrical machinery (6.9%) and measurement (4.6%).
Among the top 10 technical fields in terms of application volume, the application volume of drugs increased the fastest, reaching 12.8%, followed by Biotechnology (+ 9.5%), computer technology (+ 7.2%) and digital communication (+ 6.9%).
In addition, in 2021, 73100 international trademark applications were submitted by global applicants through the Madrid system, with a year-on-year increase of 14.4%, the fastest growth year since 2005. China continues to rank third in the world after the United States (13276) and Germany (8799) with 5272 applications.
